Discover Why Learning French Can Be an Essential Asset in Freetown!
Hello everyone,
I am Janice Bras, founder of the first French school in Freetown. Today, I would like to talk to you about a subject that is particularly close to my heart: why learn French here, in a predominantly English-speaking context like Sierra Leone? For some, the question arises: why add a new language when English is already so prevalent? But as you will see, the benefits are numerous, both professionally and culturally.
Boost Your Career with French
Learning French can open up immense opportunities in the world of work. French is spoken by nearly 300 million people around the world, and it is the official language of several international organizations. Throughout West Africa, French is the dominant language in many neighboring countries of Sierra Leone, such as Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire, and Senegal.
Mastering French gives you direct access to these markets, their businesses, and the commercial opportunities they offer. Many of our adult students, who attend our evening classes, are entrepreneurs or professionals who want to expand their network and seize opportunities beyond our borders.
Access a Rich and Diverse Culture
But learning French is not just about career or commerce. It is also a gateway to an incredibly rich cultural world. French is a language of literature, cinema, music, and philosophy. It is the language of Léopold Sédar Senghor’s poems, Sembène Ousmane’s films, and the francophone cultural diversity that spans Africa and Europe.
Learning French means opening yourself up to exchanges and dialogues that enrich our daily lives. It means learning to know and understand the beauty of the cultures that have adopted it. The French language allows you to discover invaluable works and better understand new perspectives on the world.
